Those Scamming Birds

Well today, after looking at the mourning dove and hoping the day would be soon that I'd get to see the babies, I was on my way out and got quite the surprise. The friggin' thing was born atleast a week ago lol! No wonder the parent bird looked funny last week, sitting on the nest. She appeared all puffed up and I could see a slight rim of whitish baby looking feathers all under her like the skirt of a duvet on a bed. I had an inkling then that maybe she was sitting on already born chicks but I dismissed it as her just puffing up or it being the other parent bird, which happened to maybe be bigger.

Today, I went out after mid day and lo and behold, there was a freaky, darker feathered, no tailed bird in the nest! The nest looked quite beaten up and there was bird crap all over the front of it and on the branch. The little thing is Not new born that is for sure lol! That sneaky parent bird was sitting on its young baby then, all this past week.

I went in and got my camera to take some shots of it and it got a bit scared. It started lifting itself up, puffing up, and lifting it's wings. I left it before it were to have a heart attack. After I got back, 3 hours later, I saw the parent and babe sitting together. It was so cute. The parent bird was not scared and this time, the baby wasn't either.

I guess they only have one baby ?
